The moon makes a full cycle around us every 29.5 days (correlates to a female ‘moonstrual’ cycle) and is in each sign for about 2.5 days. The Moon is the Yin, the Feminine, and the New Moon is the Yin of the lunar cycle. The Moon is watery/emotionally charged; it regulates the tides of the planets and we feel the emotional tides in us. Each phase of the lunar cycle carries its own mood, and it reflects the energy of the sign it's in. Your natal astrological chart is a unique-to-you, map of the astrology of the moment you entered the world. that’s why the time you were born and the location are critical. It’s so much more complex than just your sun sign and there is much to support the experience of getting your chart done by a professional astrologer. But for now, we’re looking at the moon and its role in our lives.
Fun facts: The most common manifestation of the female fertility cycle is to ovulate with the Full moon and menstruate with the New moon. (Day 1 of the cycle= New Moon = Day 1 of lunar cycle). As we move toward menopause, we start to see this shift, and more women begin to menstruate at the Full Moon = end of a cycle= harvesting. Not making this up. Its data. It can indicate for us, if we pay attention, that things are shifting, that fertility may be waning. In my fertility work, I encounter this most often in women who are trying to conceive later in life. It doesn’t mean you’re already past fertility, but you have passed ‘peak fertility’ (which happens around age 27-28) and there are things I would recommend and encourage to support natural conception in these situations. (Call me to work with me on conscious conception)
Just as a New Moon wants us to reflect on where we are, and what we wish for, those wishes are like seeds of intention. One seed might grow, but several seeds together are energetically more powerful. All your wishes can be related but should be focused on an outcome you desire and no more than 10 wishes at a time, because it will disperse the energy. I like 3 as a number ( or 6 or 9, depending) and I always hand write my wishes because I feel it connects them to my heart energy. A white candle is a good surrogate for moon energy, if you like candles, also any of the elements that you might like to add to give more emphasis to the work. New moon rituals are most effective within 48 hours of the time of the new moon. In the case, a simple ritual would be to put your 3 wishes on a designated altar space, carve the theme of your wishes into the wax of the white candle with a toothpick or something sharp, ask for La Luna ‘s help and support with your wishes. Light the candles. Burn for a set period of time daily until the candle is done, meditating on your desires each day as you light the candle. If you can keep this daily practice until the Full Moon, you can harvest your wishes at the full moon and put them somewhere (just don’t throw them out) for future remembrance or I like to burn them outside to send the prayer forth on the wind.
Dreaming and journaling: My dream journal reflects to me what I’ve been doing, where my thoughts are focused and how I can manifest more magic in my life these days. I can revisit the dreams, possibly journey to one if I want a deeper meditation and experience of the message I’m receiving. In Jungian dream therapy, YOU are everything/everyone in the dream, in an archetypal way, so you’re confronting aspects of yourself or having a conversation with yourself about something. In most shamanic traditions, valuable information is received in dreams, sometimes a portent warning you about something to come (like the repetitive moving dreams I had, when moving was the last thing I saw in my future) or sometimes a message from a Spirit Animal, Guide, or Ancestor communicating with you in a metaphorical way (most common for me). In Shamanism, the information received in a dream is not only accepted as being real, it’s seen as more powerful than what is received in waking life.
In my shamanic work with clients, I journey to non-ordinary reality ( a kind of dream time ) reached through meditation that is accompanied by drumming or rattling. These are symbolic of the heartbeat of Mother Earth. In a journey I receive guidance on your behalf around a problem you’ve stated you’re seeking to resolve. It will often be given to me in a clairvoyant way and I’ll be shown what needs to happen, when it’s for someone else. When I journey on my own behalf, though, I often find the information given to me to be much more metaphorical and I wonder if that is because my storyteller’s mind much prefers to meander through the story, NOT cutting to the chase. To me, the magic of journeying is in the story that unreels before me, revealing the heroine’s journey. That there will be information is a given. But I want to experience the path walked, the power animals and helping spirits, the doors opened, the secrets hidden and the power objects given to me when I journey. Journeying is a “magical mystery tour” through non-ordinary reality. (BTW, lest it sound trippy to you, I choose to journey without the aid of ayahuasca or other plant psychedelics. I just haven’t felt the need or desire.) I’m doing a fair amount of Shamanic work post-pandemic, so if you have an interest, please check out the shamanism information on my website.
Until the Full Moon, friends.
